Mercedes Cup
5 – 13 July 2008: Tennis Club Weissenhof, Stuttgart, Germany
The Mercedes Cup is one of the exciting billed events for summertime in Stuttgart. It has been held annually since 1978, and has always attracted the very best clay court specialists of the ATP Tour.
It is one of nine ATP International Series Gold events which are hosted globally every year. These events fall just below the elite ATP Masters Series tournaments in both prize money and points available – this in itself ensures that the big names of the tour support the event.
The true greats of the game have come to Stuttgart, and left with not only the coveted title, the rich purse, but with a brand new Mercedes Benz, a gift from the sponsor.
The list of previous winners reads like the ‘Who’s Who’ of tennis – Vitas Gerulaitis, Henri Leconte, Ivan Lendl and Goran Ivanisevic, and then, of course, the real legends of the game, Bjorn Borg and Andre Agassi. They have all thrilled the crowds at Stuttgart over the years.
More recently the Spaniards and Argentines have dominated in Germany, and one man in particular looks to be settling in for a long run as Mercedes Cup champion – none other than the ‘King of Clay’, Rafael Nadal.
He is hot favourite to claim his third title in Stuttgart, and looking at his current form, it shouldn’t prove too much of a battle for the talented number two.
Tickets to this primo event are already available, and unlike many top sporting events, prices are reasonable, affording the ordinary spectator an opportunity to see some of the giants of tennis in action.
The red clay tennis courts of Tennis Club Weissenhof will again play host to the 2008 Mercedes Cup from 5 – 13 July. The only variable that could cause an upset is the weather as the courts are outdoors.
As with all sports, online betting on tennis has become a huge phenomenon.
